Sermon Summary

“Can Jesus do it?” is a question many of us ask ourselves. Can He heal me? Can He fix this broken relationship? Can he fix my problems? The apostle Paul answers this question in his letter to the church of Colossae:

15 He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. – Colossians 1:15-16

The Bible is clear that Jesus can! He is all powerful. He is able! The creation of the stars and vast universe is proof that our problems are small compared to God’s power. It is easy for us to see that Jesus can. But the more difficult question for us to answer is, “Will He?” (“I know God is able. But will he?”). Luke’s gospel answers this question:

12 While [Jesus] was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”13a And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” – Luke 5:12-13

Not only is Jesus able! HE WANTS TO and HE WILL! We know this because Jesus reaches out his hand and touches the leper.

Sermon Discussion

Discussion Questions

  • What is something you desperately want Jesus to do in your life? What about in someone else’s life (family, the lost, etc)?
  • How does knowing “Jesus can” and “Jesus WANTS to” change how you are going to act in faith to see this miracle happen?

Sermon Summary

Luke 5 shows Peter exhausted and empty after toiling all night, searching for something that would finally satisfy his soul. Jesus tells Peter to put out in the deep and cast his nets. “The deep” is the place beyond control, calculations, and self-reliance, where faith and surrender take over. It’s where the Holy Spirit exposes our brokenness, where we encounter the overwhelming grace and goodness of Jesus, and where we discover our true purpose and calling. When we let go of our nets, trust Jesus, and respond in obedient faith, we move from empty nets to abundant life—finding the miracle, transformation, and purpose our hearts have been searching for.

Sermon Discussion

Discussion Questions

  • Where in your life do you feel like you’ve been “toiling all night with empty nets” (e.g., purpose, relationships, career, faith), and what might it look like to “go deeper” with Jesus in that area this week?
  • What is one “net” (relationships, money, plans, habits, fears, etc.) you feel Jesus is asking you to let go of, and how can you practically respond in obedient faith and surrender?

Sermon Summary

In Luke 4, Jesus stands in the synagogue and reads from the scroll of Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me  to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind,. to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke 4:18-19). Jesus had come to proclaim the year of jubilee. The year of jubilee was a national reset that God commanded Israel to perform every 50 years. Jubilee was to be a time of Sabbath rest, restoration and release. Jubilee was to be a reenactment of the Exodus. It would remind God’s people that God is the Rescuer who completely and permanently frees us and he is the Provider who gives rest to his people. Sadly, there is no biblical evidence that Israel kept the year of Jubilee. For 1500 years Israel had not had a reset, until Jesus proclaimed it that day in the Synagogue. Jesus is the fulfillment of Jubilee. He has come to proclaim good news for the “poor” those facing life’s struggles… those at the end of their rope… those who have been ostracized… those facing sickness, discouragement, hopelessness, shame, moral failure and oppression… those who feel insignificant, worthless, and discontent with life… those whose dreams have died and who have no hope of the future. In other words, this is good news for every one of us who are desperate for change.

Sermon Discussion

Will we experience Jubilee in 2026? It depends on two things: our awareness of our need and our acceptance of Jesus. The truly “poor” and “oppressed” understand their need for help. They are aware of their need for Jesus and humbly admit their need for Jesus to save, heal and deliver them. But they also accept who Jesus is. Who we accept Jesus to be will determine how we treat him (familiarity is the result of proximity without intimacy).

Discussion Questions

  • Do you long for a reset in your life? Can you humbly admit your need for Jesus? After listening to Sunday’s message, what are you aware of in your life that you desperately need Jesus to change in your life?
  • Do you ever find yourself becoming “familiar” with Jesus, having proximity without intimacy (remember, your level of obedience to his commands shows if Jesus has become familiar)?  Expound on what the Holy Spirit is telling you.
