A.S.K. PRAYER GUIDE
Step One: Read through prayer guide
Step Two: Find a quiet, undistracted place where you can pray out loud
Luke 18:1-8 and Luke 11:5-10 teach us how to bring the love and life of Jesus to the lost around us. We must learn to A.S.K. (Approach, Speak, Keep Asking). In both passages, we see three things at work:
- The person came into another person’s space (They APPROACHED)
- The person verbalized a request (They SPOKE)
- The person was persistent to the point of being tenacious (They KEPT ASKING)
APPROACH
In order to bring Jesus to the lost, it will require you to approach someone, to move into their space. Asking is a physical and emotional movement. Without this “movement,” we will miss countless opportunities to connect with others in life-giving ways and hinder our ability to be used by God to share the love and life of Jesus with them. There are four ingredients to making a great approach: love, courage, humility, respect, and a clear conscience.
PRAYER POINTS FOR APPROACH:
Start with calling out the names of those who are lost all around you (friends, neighbors, coworkers, etc.).
Ask God to give you a love for these people that moves you to approach them so they can know Jesus.
Ask God to give you courage to approach them.
Ask God to give you humility, a respectful attitude and a clear conscience as you approach them to bring Jesus to them.
SPEAK
To “ASK” we must also learn to speak. Words have incredible power to do good in our relational world. But the full potential of our words is not realized until they are spoken out loud. In order to share the gospel we must eventually open up our mouths and speak. In order to speak what God wants us to, we must first listen.
PRAYER POINTS FOR SPEAK:
Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you listen to the one you are approaching so that you say what God wants you to say.
Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the courage to open up your mouth to share the gospel of Jesus.
KEEP ASKING
Someone who is amazing at asking is a person who refuses to be ignored or disregarded. They are tenacious, unrelenting, and undaunted. They just keep on asking.
PRAYER POINT FOR KEEP ASKING:
Ask God to give you relentless pursuit and steadfast patience and love to not give up on the people Jesus has called you to reach.
SCRIPTURE THAT TEACHES US HOW TO A.S.K.
And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. 2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. 3 And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ 4 For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” 6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7 And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8 I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” – Luke 18:1-8 ESV
5 And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence[c] he will rise and give him whatever he needs. 9 And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. – Luke 11:5-10 ESV
