Week 3 – Wednesday

Loving the Lord with All Your Strength and Mind

Scripture

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. – 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Observation

Honoring God with our bodies demands three essential character traits: patience, self-control and discipline.

In 1 Corinthians 9 the apostle Paul says that we are called to run the race in order to win the prize. Like a track athlete that beats his body and exercises self-control, we are called to train ourselves in discipline and self-control. It is important to realize that attaining these qualities to the measure that leads to winning the prize God has for us is not something that magically happens overnight. The habits of discipline, exercising patience and practicing self-control takes time and training.

Application

Experts tell us that it takes 60 days of consistent practice in order to form a habit and ten thousand hours to master something. If you are going to develop these traits that Paul is talking about, consistency is key.

So where should you start? Start small. One small habit performed every day develops discipline and self-control in us so that later we will be able to practice the bigger habits.

Here is an example: I am going to read my Bible before eating any food for the next 60 days. This is going to teach me to be disciplined, patient and to exercise self-control. Another example: I am going to stop eating food every day after 7PM. One more example: I am going to stay off all media after 7PM for the next 60 days.

Choose something that you know will help you grow so you can love the Lord with all your strength and attain the prize he has for you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, make me a man/woman of discipline, patience and self-control. Help me to say no to my fleshly cravings to you and train me to say “yes” to the pain of today so that I can receive the prize of the blessed life tomorrow. Lord, make me a man/woman of consistency. Help me to be faithful in the small things so I can grow O Lord and learn to love you and those around me with all my strength. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
